TRADITION
The term “suzani” comes from the Persian word for “needle” and translated freely means “needlework”. The suzani embroidery is a product of years of tradition and refinement of designs that was made in the regions of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in association with wedding. There would be a variety of suzanis made each having specific purpose in the wedding tradition. The large suzanis, were embroidered as bed covers. Other smaller suzanis were made as cushions covers. These suzanis represented the skills of the bride and her family and the fundamental part of the bride’s dowry, which was presented to the groom’s family in exchange for the marriage price. Once the events of the wedding completed the suzanis were stored away and only brought out for limited use on special occasions.
